I think it depends largely how it is used. Sure, you can take it as just a game and play around and make pixel art, but applied properly to developing minds, it can help teach:

Architecture

Spatial Planning

Boolean Logic (Redstone)

Economics (On large servers with dynamic economies, like MT)

Teamwork / Collaboration (working together on large structures or projects)

I would have to disagree. Minecraft does develop creativity, but like all games it is an addiction which is usally not educational. Architecture does not have to deal with this at all you are not triangulating the way a building should work to stay stabile nor are you calculating the ways the building while move or lean in case of any problems it may face due to nature. It gets the creative juices flowing and that is pretty much it.

I agree! It teaches skillmaking and creativity. Its also quite helpful at learning to be a engineer if you know redstone <object class="emojione" data="https://resources.enjin.com/1489581540/themes/core/images/emojione/svg/1f61b.svg?0" type="image/svg+xml" standby=":p">:p</object>
It can help develop creative areas of the brain as well as spatial planning but as far as real life applications (Architecture,Engineering) go Minecraft is pretty much useless.
To those saying Redstone is good for engineering, it's really not similar. At ALL. lol <object class="emojione" data="https://resources.enjin.com/1489581540/themes/core/images/emojione/svg/1f642.svg?0" type="image/svg+xml" standby=":)">:)</object>
It is educational in some sense. It's a great way to relax and to be creative so I think it might help in education
Enough content to be considered educational? No not really. It has its negative points, ones that struggle with gaming addiction and cannot define a line between playing games casually and also keeping a social life. It can happen to anyone and this game can be extremely addictive which could cause ones education to suffer if they let it take over their lives.

It does however promote creativeness and team work to a certain extent.

When I very first played this game I was useless at it, barely able to make nice looking cobble homes. But after working with other people that are far more creative then I can ever be its taught me to think outside the box and attempt strange designs which have worked out perfectly. It makes you think about design and you can see how creative people are on servers. Its taught people how to work together to achieve bigger things and how hard work can pay off.

Now when I sit and draw or paint I see a lot more creativity and I find it easier to do than I did before <object class="emojione" data="https://resources.enjin.com/1489581540/themes/core/images/emojione/svg/1f642.svg?0" type="image/svg+xml" standby=":)">:)</object>
I haven't read through the comments so if I repeat anything I apologize. Minecraft is defiantly education both in the online and offline modes and if you browse through the different online communities you will learn even more. You can learn about economy, bartering, trading ect. You can learn about fair play, teamwork and socialization skills. In the case of servers that use plugins like factions you can learn about war, taking over territory, strategics, resource management ect. Just the basic game offers geology type learning, you learn about gravity, survival skills, basic tool use ect. Red stone so of course there will be some educational benefit.one teaches the basics of how electricity works and also allows for some very creative moments. Pretty much everything other then the giant spiders, creepers, zombies and skeletons can be related to real life.
I think that the most significant aspect of education that Minecraft has to offer is planning skills. Teaching a student to best follow steps and understand/form logical thoughts/processes in a creative and fun way.

Bad Example 1: To craft an item you must first collect item 1, item 2, item 3, and then combine them to make item 4. Then you can use item 4 plus item 5 to make the final item 6.

Bad Example 2: I want to build a sky platform but cant fly there. I need to build a pillar up. I don't want to jump down and die so I need to build stairs down. I can use the stairs for both and remove the pillar. I should have built the pillar with sand so i could sit at the bottom and remove it.

So when it comes to factual topics I dont not believe it is very feasible but for creativity and logic it is excellent.

If you account for redstone then it could have additional significance towards advanced logical thought but still no significance towards factual topics.

With the ability for Minecraft to be modded who knows what some rockstar of an educator could do. Any way you can make learning fun then the information is better received.

Lucky kids!
