I think it depends largely how it is used. Sure, you can take it as just a game and play around and make pixel art, but applied properly to developing minds, it can help teach:

Architecture

Spatial Planning

Boolean Logic (Redstone)

Economics (On large servers with dynamic economies, like MT)

Teamwork / Collaboration (working together on large structures or projects)
It is educational to some extent

its as educational as legos are to young minds <object class="emojione" data="https://resources.enjin.com/1489581540/themes/core/images/emojione/svg/1f61b.svg?0" type="image/svg+xml" standby=":p">:p</object> which is very!!!
its highly educational in many ways, architecture, team work, redstone can teach about inverters and delays, im acually trying to get my school to make minecraft a bonus thing to do
Minecraft is educational in the sense that it builds the creative mind and makes you think logically, but it isn't in the sense that kids sit here and play it for hours on in. Its all about moderation.
Minecraf is already being used in several classrooms:

This site is devoted to using a variety of games in the classroom (Even WoW):

I would have to disagree. Minecraft does develop creativity, but like all games it is an addiction which is usally not educational. Architecture does not have to deal with this at all you are not triangulating the way a building should work to stay stabile nor are you calculating the ways the building while move or lean in case of any problems it may face due to nature. It gets the creative juices flowing and that is pretty much it.
schaefer, think younger... Minecraft is a perfect educational tool for the younger generation... Economy, Teamwork, Creativity. If the teacher is really into it, they can make all kinds of assignments that derive from Minecraft: They can make a journal for each day they come to minecraft, "If you want to build a house this big and bricks cost this many gold, how much gold do you need", A teacher can make Historical buildings and what not and have a virtual field trip. The list can go on and on really...
Yea i think it is GREAT for a creative mind!
