If you just want the basics, you can check out Photoshop Elements... It's pretty standard as far as Photoshop goes, and a whole lot cheaper. If you are looking to get into a lot more professional stuff, I would check out the creative suits. They are very expensive but you can do some AMAZING stuff if you are willing to learn the tools of the trade.
Also, if you are in a university, a lot of them have deals with Adobe to get their stuff for insanely cheap (I got CS5.5 for free!). There are also a whole lot of really good free ware versions that do mostly the same stuff. You can check out Gimp (No not your type of gimp Danni ;P)
