They can't use creative mode in events. Build Team permissions are only allowed to be used for Build Team projects. They don't have any advantages over anyone else in this case.

On the other hand, if you manage to make a better build than some BT staff, you're likely to get your creative work acknowledged should you ever consider to apply for BT.
