You do need iTunes to upgrade your ios to 6 if you don't have it already, the on board upgrade will not work, if your ios 5 device is jailbroken.

Madster, as long as your iPhone has iOS 6 - 6.1 you should be fine. Dont go past 6.1 when 6.2 comes out.
