I've just been looking at the minecraft subreddit to keep an eye on what people are discovering, there's a ton of new stuff!
One of Notch's developers said the game now includes the FastRender mod to improve performance by changing how the chunks are accessed. This bodes well for future updates if they're looking towards the modding community for improvements

It is effected by the block under it. And the jukebox recipe has a diamond in the middle.
