[Enjin Archive] Questions regarding optifine and Open-gl on 13" mac.
Started by [E] antonyoo

This is my laptop.

MacBook Pro

13-inch, Early 2011

Processor 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7

Memory 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000 384 MB

Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53)

I am terrible when it comes to computers, especially the technical matters. And I was wondering if running optifine on my laptop would make it more "intense" for my computer. In other words, will it add to overheating and shorten the "lifespan" of my computer?

Also, I would like to know if opengl does will be intense on my computer too. And would you recommend that I keep it turned on or off?
I run optifine on a 2007 13". I had 2 GB of RAM until yesterday and it ran just fine with no overheating. The only noticeable difference that I got from optifine was a higher framerate at spawn and that I am able to use a higher draw distance.

I also added the smc fan controller. The computer usually stays between 70 C and 80 C and I can adjust the speed when I need it.
Here are my actual specs

2.2 GHz Intel Core Duo

4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

Intel GMA X3100 144 MB

OSX Lion 10.7.4

Just finished downloading the smc fan controller. Any advice on what my RPM should be set at? Thanks.

And I had a followup question. Will the additional RPM not be excessive on the fan? I replaced the fan about a month ago, and I just wanted to make sure.
It can be if you run it at the full speed all the time. I usually leave it on the default setting and really only use the temp sensor since it shows up even when MC is running and the actual RPM readout. I use it to monitor if the computer is getting above 85 C so that I can adjust whatever to bring it back down. I've got a 2011 Macbook pro that is similar to yours and .I've never had to run it at a higher RPM more than the default

If I leave it on default settings, will the RPM still go up on its own if the computer gets hot? I dont want there to be a situation where I forget to change the fan speed when necessary, and have the computer get over-heated.

And is the RPM for the default setting higher than the default setting without the smc fan controller?

Thanks for your time.
It wil automatically change speed by itself. You can just set the min and max. I don't know about the default being the same but mine runs at 2500 RPM most of the time whe I'm using Safari or a low load program. The max it allows is 6500 RPM I think.

Also, Ive noticed that the temperature stays at mostly 79C ~ 81C(with the smc fan cooler set at default). And every now and then, it would suddenly say its 85C then go back down to 79C ~ 81C. Is this an ok temperature level? If not, what should my RPM be set at so that I can bring it down to an adequate level? Thanks again.
That is an okay temp for a laptop running a game. It will jump up and down on it's own, even to 85. Does it idle at 79 or just when running MC?

well, that was before I was running optifine... Now its usually stuck at 83~86 when Im near "stuff". And sometimes itll go up to 87~88. The improvements in terms of game play after installing optifine are amazing. The new temperatures, in your view, shouldn't be too much of a problem should it?

And thanks so much for your help. Ive never gotten so much technical help from a single person before.
