How about just a simple wood house. A nice little garden surrounding it complete with flowers and a pond, also trees and tall grass. Using light and dark wood tones. Build a main centre where the town facilities are out of stone then have farming and housing areas outside, those could be made out of wood...

Sandstone, sand, endstone, yellow/white/orange wool (for decorating ), birtch planks, and Glowstone. Those items make a nice bright, flavorful and orginized city. I want to stay clear of sand stone because it is expensive....

Sandstone is actually quite easy to collect, you just have to go to a popular desert warp and find a patch where someone has taken all the sand but left the sandstone, and pick it all out.

That's still time consuming for little sandstone
