[Enjin Archive] I need to make a small server
Started by Unknown User

Ok guys

I DON'T INTEND TO ADVERTISE HERE COS IT ISN'T GONNA BE PUBLIC

Ok with that said

I would like to make a small server to go on with my friends

I want to know what type of hardware I would need to host about 5 people at a time

I would prefer a laptop but I guess a pc will be neccesary....

So any tips in what I should be getting would be great thanks guys
Sorry but I think it would probably be better to post this on minecraftforum.net
Why?
Meh, maybe the wrong section of the forum but there's an off topic thread in which you can post whatever you like (almost...) It's fine here as long as he doesn't advertise the IP...

Anyways, by default - a minecraft server runs on about 100MB RAM. Most people increase that to 1 or 2GB. You will, of course want to keep a similar amount of RAM free.

RAM is not expensive, perhaps $30 for 4GB last time I bought some. It's far better to run a server from a desktop, as opposed to a laptop because of improved components and customisation options.

Try this out, it will tell you if it's possible: http://canihostaminecraftserver.com/

To find out your internet speed, use this: http://www.speedtest.net/

I would recommend at LEAST 4GB of RAM, on a small server at least. There is a full tutorial to setting up your own server here: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Tutorials/Setting_up_a_server
Thanks tp

I thought the support section was for minecraft problems

Even hardware...

Meh who cares lol

Yeah thanks tp
still an info for you by me, Im hosting my private servers on Nitrado.net, Its very cheap and you get it for 5 people for like 6$ /month? You get 800 mb ram as as a starter pack with 4 slots. Every slot you extend it costs like 1$.

The Webinterface is very easy to use and you can connect to it via Filezilla, etc.
If it's only for 5 people you don't really need a lot, I can run a server with that many people on my laptop fine, I have an i7 chip and 8gb of RAM, although I only use 2GB, as TPrez suggested. Although I also agree that running it on a desktop would be a better idea!
my computer can run a server easily, but my connection is not made for hosting.... Downstream: 256 kbs and upstream 60 kps.
for 5 people? Vanilla? Can run it on any old pizza box... I host a server on a 7 year old tower than cant even run the game, hosts a server just fine ;) if your looking for industrial craft style mods or any resource heavy plugins or more people than just a few at a time then your gonna need something a little stronger but really. 2gb RAM and any ol' processor made in the past 5 years should cut it, as long as your bandwidth is decent.

edit: thats if you intend to run the tower just as a server, not play the game on the same machine. If youw ant that find something with 4gb of ram or higher minimum to keep things running smoothly.

That connection's barely made for browsing. Where do you live that your DSL provider is only giving you 256kbps? o_o
