what happens when the computer storing the map data has a full memory? or is the server stored in a cloud storage type of deal?

The world has a set limit (13500 x 13500) Once you reach this limit, you cannot go further (It will throw you back). And since most of the world is already generated, the computer most likely won't ever run out of memory.
