Thanks, I'll look some up for the update. I'm trying to design one without a spawner for single player, too, but I'll definitely look some up. The orb looks really complicated, I really want it compact, so I'll look some others up, but thanks for the help + suggestions.

You don't have enough spawning ground. You need a large room, not a tunnel. Dig water channels into the floor of the room to carry the mobs.
The rate of mob spawning is proportional to the number of available squares in your spawner. That's why you need a room and not just a corridor. Also, you gotta deactivate the above-ground area by lighting up the area above your trap with torches. Otherwise, hostile mobs are gonna spawn there instead of in your trap
