NOTE: back up your existing minecraft.jar, by simply renaming it, before you upgrade, incase you want to play on the main, when its updated.

How come I have NEVER gotten my MC to connect to the temp server? I've got the address and everything correct, but the game never manages to link to it in the server list...

it could be you are running the wrong version of Minecraft wug. the temp server is Version 1.2, while the main server is version 1.1.

I have been playing single player on mc 1.2.3 .... if I downgrade to the 1.1 version and delete my existing minecraft.jar will I lose what I have done so far?

No, you will not loose what you have done, but what it will say is under the world name it will say something like "needs to be converted" I suggest that you dont go into your world unless you want it without all the 1.2 stuff, it will convert the same map back to a 1.1 map. So if you downgrade just dont open any 1.2.3 singleplayer maps you have.
