[Enjin Archive] Need help updating my computers bios.
Started by Unknown User

Okay so lately I've been trying to really see why my computer has problems.

A couple of problems it has that I really want to fix are

It hangs on the windows is shutting down screen then after about 20 minutes it goes to a bsod

After the computer has been on for i'd say about 4 hours any USB device I plug into it won't recognize. If i want it to recognize i have to restart the computer first.

And the one i'm currently working on, Whenever I restart my computer, my computer freezes on the Windows is starting logo.

I think this has something to due with my bios however gateway is terrible at explaining to people how to update their bios.

Apparently there was an update for the bios on July last year that fixes some stuff that seems promising.

"Fixes S4 suspend black screen and halt on."

However, these files they gave us don't really match what they have on the readme and I really don't want to fuck up my computer by flashing this the wrong way.

Can someone please download that Bios File update and try to explain to me how i can properly update my bios? Thanks.

Hey it's actually really easy Just download the file and extract it somewhere right-click afuwin.exe and choose "run as admin", click open and choose the ROM file in DOS folder, then check "Main BIOS image", "boot block", "Destroy Cmos checksum" & "Restart after programming" and finally hit "Flash"
Thanks Zyntrax. So I just updated my bios and my computer still froze on the starting windows screen.... I have no idea what is causing it.... One small fact is it freezes during that part of starting windows where you see your usb devices power off then back on. Except my usb devices never power back on due to the fact its frozen.

Also it always gets passed the starting windows screen only after I've left my computer off for a minute or longer. Perhaps a power issue?

I sent my computer back to Gateway and they replaced the motherboard and the problem still persists.

I use a Gateway Fx6801-03 Gaming Computer btw. Here are the specs.

If you guys can help me figure this out that would be awesome!
don't you have a repair disk?
Well, When I got the computer it came preloaded with Windows Vista 64 bit, then I found out they were upgrading everyone from Windows Vista to Windows 7 64 bit for free. So I got the "Gateway Windows 7 Upgrade Kit"

Also I should mention after it freezes on starting windows whenever I reboot my computer it asks me if i should search for the problem and it never finds anything wrong.
Okay so Omega convinced me to reformat my computer. Currently I'm copying my music & videos to an external HDD.

But the problem is I only have the Gateway Windows 7 Upgrade Kit which was made for people who wanted to upgrade their windows vista computer to windows 7. However there is a product Key on the back of the case for this disc maybe I can download one from the internets?
Yeah just download any vista disc from any torrent site and burn and install it.

All vista images should contain all versionsof vista.

BTW

Have you tried starting up in failsafe mode and run msconfig and uncheck everything underautostart?
Nope, Don't know what Failsafe mode is..

I actually was able to make a boot disc for Windows 7 64 bit however on that boot disc also contains the same "Starting Windows Screen" and on that screen the computer freezes on the same spot! I don't think its windows, I think it might be either a hardware issue or something with my bios..

However I have tried stuff with msconfig before. Like starting up with only the windows services and startup programs / drivers. And it yielded the same response.

It seems fishy that the only way to get passed the "Windows is starting screen" is that I have to wait a full minute with the computer turned off.

Perhaps a power issue?
It's really hard to tell whats causing the issue, it's a shame ur not in gothenburg sweden or i'd have fixed it or atleast told u whats wrong.

The best solution i can give you now is probably to send it in again.
Yeah, I ran Memtest and it passed twice with no errors.

I believe its either a bios thing or a hardware failure.

I'm going to open up my CPU and make sure everything is nicely fit. nothing is loose etc.
