Okay, it popped up with this thing, first thing I did was connect it to my PC and itunes, it said to insert a SIM card so I did.

Then it said my SIM isnt supported or something...

Is there a way I can unlock this thing without a simcard? and without jailbreaking it.

(If your wondering how I got it, it was from my uncle because he didnt use it anymore)

I amz newb wit le iphone..
Well, yes it needs to be jailbroken if it wasnt already a unlocked phone(the expensive iPhones that are 649 dollarsish). Also if it looks like that I think it hasnt been updated in a while, so id plug it in and update

I cant do anything on itunes when I plug it in.

Call your provider for assistance on the subject oh wait you can't you sim won't work >.>
Try a skanky sim card?

XD sorry, had to.
If you aren't using it as a phone, you can always find someone who has a prepaid sim that can be read by the phone to activate it. Once it is wiped and activated, you can pull the sim out. It will give you a message saying that the sim is not inserted but it can be used as an iPod. I used my old 3G as an ipod for years after I pulled the sim out. If your uncle still has that larger type sim card that is used in the iPhone 3 and newer, you can reinsert it to activate the phone after it is wiped as long as it is still active and valid.
Jailbreak is needed to unlock the iPhone for prepaid cards. Jailbreak is NOT bad, I jailbreak my iOS Devices since the IPhone 3G was released and never had any Problems with it, only positive experiences. The actual and working jailbreak Software can be found here: evasi0n.com
The only time jailbreaking is bad if you need to serverice it, But personally I would just go to a 3rd party, since they can do it wayyy cheaper than apple

apple will repair you jailbroken device as well. you just void your 6 month warranty. on an old iphone like that your warranty is long gone. i still wouldn't send it into apple because they charge too much. they wanted me to pay $340 go get my fathers ipad screen fixed ( an new ipad costs only $299)
