[Enjin Archive] Big Problem, My Graphics Card Overheated.
Started by Unknown User

I Was playing minecraft last night, like I always do. I Was in mumble, talking to a few friends, when the computer froze. Thinking nothing of it, I decided to look in the computer (the siding was already off, it's always like that, more air circulation), when I noticed the graphics card fan, was not spinning at all. And then I smelled smoke, like something was burning. I decided to gently touch the graphics card (the motor box itself), to test the temperature, and Instead I burned my finger. Immediately, I shut the computer down, and unplugged the power cord. The smell of smoke increased, but eventually went away once the card, since it was off, started to cool down.

This morning, I tested the card, by turning on the computer, and the fan would not spin at all. Not even when I tried to manually flick it, hoping it would start spinning if I gave it some help. I have since removed the graphics card, and luckly, I have someone taking a look at it. But in the meantime, I am running off of my computer's integrated graphics card, that (you guessed it) will not support ANY game what so ever, not even minecraft/java.

As such, I am out of commission for minecraft, until I can *SOMEHOW* get a replacement card. Which, considering I have no job, and can't spare any money except for costly bills, won't be for QUITE a long time (several months). I'll still be online in the forums and mumble. But, that's the most I CAN do.

I'll just pray for a miracle to happen, unless someone has an unused card, in good shape, that they could send to me? <object class="emojione" data="https://resources.enjin.com/1489581540/themes/core/images/emojione/svg/2639.svg?0" type="image/svg+xml" standby=":(">:(</object>
What kind of video card do you have and is it PCI-E ?
I have an NVIDIA GEFORCE GT220, PCI-Express. Besides that, I know nothing else about it, Like it's memory, ect, as I don't remember where I put the box it came in, nor do i have the card, to say the specific specs that are listed on it's side... <object class="emojione" data="https://resources.enjin.com/1489581540/themes/core/images/emojione/svg/2639.svg?0" type="image/svg+xml" standby=":(">:(</object>
Hunter, for one thing, close the box. The box is designed to pull air in one side and let it flow across the parts, rather than just openly circulating, as well as leaving it open to electrostatic damage..

Other than that, what's done is done... I suppose it is worth saving up a bit more and buying one with a nice cooling system on it; is your card right next to any other important elements, such as your processor?

Make sure that the box's cooling system is free of dust, and once again, close the box.... it does seem a bit illogical, but that's what it was designed for. <object class="emojione" data="https://resources.enjin.com/1489581540/themes/core/images/emojione/svg/1f642.svg?0" type="image/svg+xml" standby=":)">:)</object>
Also hunter. This is a temporary solution that might work for a little bit, If t is the FAN that isnt spinning because it has melted or become deformed, try buying a new fan, BUT if its the motor, you should try taking off the side and putting a house fan/ desk fan on a still to the height of where the fan was and turn it on high. IDK might work
Thank you both for the suggestions.

*UPDATE*

My friend that took a look at the card after I dropped it off at his house, came over with the card after supper, and said there was nothing wrong with the card as far as he could tell, and apparently a cable/cord that connected the fan motor to the card itself, had came loose.

He told me to try the card again, and I have, which even now the fan is spinning, and seems to be running ok. I am going to do several tests, such as trying minecraft, and then Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3, and seeing how it handles over the course of a few hours, and see it the temperature changes/increases at all.

Wish me luck, if the tests are successful, I won't need to replace it.. tho I'll still keep my options open as experience has taught me caution over hope.
Good luck, Hunter!
