I've owned minecraft for 2 years, I've been on Minetown for 20 months of that. However, those 4 months before Minetown I was experiencing my very first multiplayer server.
Back when not many people knew how to edit servers and there were hardly any plugins out for them.
The first few weeks of the server I hid in a small hole and avoided everyone. I soon started getting involved with communities. I joined a community where we all lived in a cobble city in the sky, all members would take it in turns guarding and patrolling. Normally I came back online to find it had some griefing damage done, but it was only cobble so we didnt mind. We had chest protections and the only way people can steal them was with TNT or creepers. Not many of the griefing noobs had access to those so we were generally safe.
After getting tired of constantly repairing our cobble city we moved further out from spawn, it was like an entirely different world. We were rarely griefed, hardly raided and slowly grew as we accepted more travelers to live in our city. Our neighbours were either friends we traded with from time to time or enemies we would hunt and plan attacks on their city.
Mods and admins didnt get involved, but they did come and play around with us from time to time. One admin in particular would play along with us, tp to us and tell us some valuable information which we could act upon. We wasnt being given special treatment, he did this for all clans as it made the server more interesting. He was seen as a god by players.
The server I played was completely chaotic, any that did manage to build well there were spotted by admins and given access to a new world that only staff invites would give you access. It also had no permissions but you were safer there. Everyone longed and worked hard to get noticed by admins.
A few of my friends were accepted, they went on to design many of the maps you see in famous youtubers videos <object class="emojione" data="https://resources.enjin.com/1489581540/themes/core/images/emojione/svg/1f642.svg?0" type="image/svg+xml" standby=":)">:)</object>
It was a good server, many of my friends left for the invite only server, the ones left behind soon left for new servers.
Its how I met arvila and became close to him, when he decided to leave for new pastures I followed, and this is where we ended up <object class="emojione" data="https://resources.enjin.com/1489581540/themes/core/images/emojione/svg/1f642.svg?0" type="image/svg+xml" standby=":)">:)</object>
A server with no mods or staff and only the chest protection given can be a good thing. As long as theres always something going on and something for players to aim for their trouble it would always remain that way

No! Certainly not. It's just a "wilder" server that allows PVP, methinks.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
there appears to be confusion!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
okay... first things first. i cheated, and griefed, and spawnkilled on OTHER SERVERS.
ones NOT related to MT...
I love MT and would NEVER jeopardize my ability to continue playing here...
next, I say to allow hacks in order to make it possible to get resources. honestly, who wants to have huge battles and risk losing an entire fortress that took 3 months to get the materials to make it?!?!
i say, let them have diamonds they cheated to get, and then get obliterated and sent back to the stone age!
i dont like the PVP server because Ill spend weeks making something and then get raided in minutes and POOF its gone...
if it was like "take 3 days to build this via cheating, lose in 3 hrs" id be like meh, trry again later...
if its "ill spend 3 weeks building this and then...AHH HEY WTH YOU! YOU! ITS GONE ITS ALLLLL GONEEEEE"
....not much incentive to continute, however if i could cheat and quickyl harvest diamonds, get full ar, sneak in their unprotected base while they looted mine, planted TNT and detonated it when they came home? suddenly it gets ALOT more appealing..
think of what DanniDorrito said, guarding their cobble fort in the sky!!
i would LOVE to have to take shifts playing lookout, having like, 5 people around the world in a team so someone is always on, watching, waiting....
it would add a whole new dimension to MC and a radically new playstyle.
i agree that cheating is wrong and in a controlled environment, it is unacceptable.
however, people dont like losing stuff, and thus refrain from risk taking, you need to lower the cost of failure to encourage battle in a PVP manner
to facilitate the construction and collection of resources, while incentivizing risk taking in battle, and lower the frustration of failure, without making it a pure "creative mode" scenario.
allow cheats. or allow JUST xray or intruduce a system to buy mats cheap via "kill points"
my ultimate goal in allowing cheats it to make it easier to build, so recovering from loss isnt so hard, while still making it tough enough to gather resources that there is a reason to attack peoples bases (aside from just enjoying watching their base burn >;D )
sorry these are so long, its something I've wanted a long while and have wrestled greatly with cheats vs. no cheats and whatnot
i WANT your input, but i DO NOT want you to jump to conclusions about my intentions, im having trouble explaining them, but please try to assume the best, not the worst

Well to start, i went to work and made some extra cash, then I went to Africa and found some poor people. taught then how to use a PC and gave them a laptop and a copy of MC. then I made a server, hosted FTB direwolf20 pack got them all playing, waited a few weeks. and then. when the time was right. JUST when they felt safe!!!
i taught them English, so we could more effectively communicate, i mean, how could i bait them to spawn if they were typing in clicks and Afrikaans?
so after months of teaching them English and assimilating them to the norms of the interwebs... the time was right... to...
FORGET I DID ANY OF THAT!
since if i was planing to grief them, it would be less fun if i worked at it that long, so i had to forget i planned it, that way when i griefed them it would feel more special. only after the joy and jubilation faded would i remember setting this whole thing up, after the memory was triggered of course..
that trigger, was you.
so thank you !!!wawon0!!! for triggering my memories so i can now move on and live a better and more logical life, never to grief again and especially
NEVER REPLY TO SOME HOLIER THAN THOU SCRUB WHO SEEKS ONLY TO FIND FAULT WITH OTHERS AND MAKE AD HOMINEM ARGUMENTS BASED ON CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDENCE THEY AREN'T EVEN WILLING TO SUBMIT DUE TO THE FACT THAT IT IS LITERALLY FALSE
seriously bro, it wasnt here, it WAS fun, it was a competing server, if anything i did MT a favor... please, just dont.

You said you mowed kids down on the FTB server with portal gun turrets. You say you had a good time, and that the other people got really upset.
Care to explain where you found these people?
Also, you want to hack? Leave minetown to hack. End of story
http://bymblr.ytmnd.com/
just, no.
Minetown isn't the only place to find a FTB server and as crazy as it sounds to the civilized community of Minetown, there are servers which negative behaviors are enabled or outright encouraged. Just cause someone goes with the flow of normal play on another server (being a royal shithead of a person) doesn't mean they're incapable of following the flow of another (being decent and kind to other players).
I do understand what n0ttsweet is suggesting and why Wildlands doesn't exactly fit the image.
