The overall art style in general has changed, that's what's unappealing. They went from creatures that were based on living creatures, used toned down colors, and had a more basic design to all sorts of whatever they are with bright epileptic colors.

In a way, you could say 1st gen was transformers' art style and 5th gen is some generic goofy happy anime.
