I'm looking for a good way to make a mob spawner trap, preferably lava so the meat gets cooked. Can anyone show me a good way to do this? Thanks.

Like slurth said, those two will be your best friends. You could also ask in game if you can see someone's grinder. If I'm on I know I have a pork set up I'd be more than happy to let you see.

How big is the mob spawner area in which mobs spawn? is it 8 wide 8 long and 3 high?

4 radius for width and length, and 3 up.. NOTE this is radius starting from the spawner block. So its 8x8x3 to contain a spawner completly. Now if you are using pigs for the spawner, this is not needed. Since they will ONLY spawn on grass. just put grass where you want them to spawn. As for putting them into lava. its completely up to you, there are many ways on how to control mob flow, google should help. and use drop them through lava and a drop should do it. for example, drop them through lava then like 7+ blocks for fall damage(or until they die while still on fire) and cooked pork drops. I have a few personal favourites that are easy to make.
1- Place grass on the end of extended pistons. Surround grass with a glass cage, leaving a height of 2 air in the cage.
Then set the pistons to a slow loop. make them retract say every 12 seconds. Then once they do, they'll fall. Place lava 5/6 blocks beneath the grass, with a nice drop to finish them off.
2: Make a diamond shaped grassland, walls surrounding it. Then dig down a diamond shape in the middle, leaving you with a diamond ring shape. Put water pushing towards the hole. Make a platform in middle of hole. Place spawners around the edges, near the walls. Place lava a few blocks down in hole, then a drop. Warp to center platform. Hold wheat. Pigs begin to spawn, pushed by water. Once in range they'll lock onto your wheat and tumble into the lava/
I was rather vague with my explanations but I can elaborate if you really need.
