The problem with that is that elevated rails are more than often horrible on the eyes; underground is both more protected and invisible.
I dont think they would be to much of a eye sore if you made them ornate. Now they could be an eye sore if you just stuck up a 1x1 wooden block railway for 500 miles. But if you made them looks like aqueducts, im not so sure they would be. What kind of above ground railway system are you thinking about?
also if you put it above ground people could get onto it and ruin it
exactly what i hate lion. On my coasters someone goes "weepeeeee" and i runinto them. Or they decide to rob my boosters. Or they decide to ride my boosters. Or they decide : Ooh like, free rails. yeah but that was on the temp server drupe. And you built that thing right next to the spawn. so there were a bunch of 8yr olds that came to our server for 2 seconds and thought, oh hey a rollercoaster. Ill go grief it then leave. But when your faction is as far away from the spawn as ours is, then it is unlikely that someone who does not stay a long time in our server will make it that far. And anyone who does stay in our server that long prob wont grief it.
My 2 cent, how about make a vote?

Underground seems better, you get the resources, takes man power, but hey, if its worth doing its worth doing right <object class="emojione" data="https://resources.enjin.com/1489581540/themes/core/images/emojione/svg/1f600.svg?0" type="image/svg+xml" standby=":d">:d</object>.

Underground its hidden looks more like a real city ect <object class="emojione" data="https://resources.enjin.com/1489581540/themes/core/images/emojione/svg/1f600.svg?0" type="image/svg+xml" standby=":d">:d</object>

I guess underground would be better in the long run. It just takes alot more time to do.
Before we clutter this thread too much, I suggest a new one for the railway. <object class="emojione" data="https://resources.enjin.com/1489581540/themes/core/images/emojione/svg/1f61b.svg?0" type="image/svg+xml" standby=":-p">:-p</object>
Above takes more resources, mining underground has the chance for resources. underground more profitable but costs picks etc.
