Main will be resetting for 1.18.
We know this decision is heartbreaking for some and joyous for others. For many of us, Main has played a major role in our lives the past half decade. We know this will be a major change, and we want you to know that this was not an easy decision for us. We considered a lot, and we want to make sure our reasoning is clear.
There are a lot of reasons we’ve come to this decision, with the largest being the changes in world generation. In addition to the complete overhaul of caves, many other features of world generation are seeing changes as well. Mountains have been completely overhauled, and many other biome and biome locations have seen tweaks as well. This update is the biggest change to overworld world generation since 1.7, which was released in June 2014. By comparison, that update was released less than a year after we moved away from Classic. Even with Mojang making old worlds compatible with the update, there would still be tons of missing features for Main if we updated. It just isn’t possible for us to give you the full 1.18 experience with an updated Main.
Maintaining a server that is so old also poses significant challenges to the infrastructure. The server software community has evolved a lot since Main’s release. Since Main had similar plugins to Classic from the beginning many of these plugins have become very outdated, but not resetting all the user data has forced us to stick with this old infrastructure. The reset will give us the ability to bring everything up to new standards and give you new features and less bugs. The same argument is also true for the world itself. While Mojang does give people the ability to upgrade their worlds, in a lot of cases, this is associated with some minor bugs that stack up and cause issues in a world as old as main. For example, during the analysis of player statistics for a later paragraph, we found 9 different player data formats from different versions.
Additionally, we feel it’s time. Main has been around a long time, and it’s seen a lot. The map was originally announced in March 2016. I can certainly say my life is completely different than it was then, and I’m sure the same is true for most of you. Of Minetown’s three major maps, Main has been the “main” map the longest, and by a wide margin. Remember, Main was originally generated in 1.9. Most of our oceans are still pre-1.13 oceans. Any change to world generation since 1.9 is relegated to the fringes of the map, and even then there’s no guarantee (for example, there is a single bamboo forest on the entire map). It’s time for a reset, and now is the best time to do so.
Main has seen 58,000 unique players, which is enough to fill the entirety of Dodger Stadium. Together, we played an astonishing 31 years on the server and travelled an astronomical 600 million blocks, which is roughly equivalent to two round trips from the Earth to the Sun. We crafted a total of 41 million items and mined 26 million stone, which would be enough blocks to build the empire state building 200 times. Collectively, we dealt 105 million hearts of damage, which would take a regular zombie 3 years. We spent 188 days sneaking and much more than that having fun together and enjoying our amazing community!
We want to make sure that the next map is as good as it can be. To help make sure of this, we will be releasing weekly dev diaries in this subforum, starting next week. They will continue to be released until the new map comes out and will detail everything about the update process. We want to be open about our decisions so that every player knows exactly what’s going on, and aren’t blindsided by any changes made. Before that, we have prepared a short Q&A on some important information regarding the new map.
Q: What will the new map be called?
A: Idarun
Q: Will I be able to transfer any items or builds to this map?
A: No. This map will be a clean reset, nothing will be transferred.
Q: Will the ranks and cosmetics I purchased in the shop be brought over?
A: We can’t guarantee every cosmetic ever purchased on Main will be supported. However, a majority of cosmetics sold since the perks were revamped in early 2017 will most likely work on the new map. If you’ve bought a nickname, colored anvil, colored signs, or many other items you will still have access to them on the new map.
Q: How will this affect lore books I have?
A: We're still working on the details of that.
Q: What will happen to the map?
A: It will remain up as a museum server and a global world download will be made available. Your builds will not be deleted.
Q: When will this new map be released?
A: January 28, 2022 at 12:00 PM ET.
Q: How will this affect other Minetown servers?
A: For the most part, it won’t. Servers such as Skyblock, Creative, and UHC will see improvements and updates, but will not be reset or anything like that. However, this reset announcement is attached to some Vanilla news:
We will be shutting down Vanilla for the time being to focus our server and developmental abilities on the new map.
This is not a permanent change. Vanilla will be back at some point, but for the time being will be closed. Over the next several weeks we will offer unlimited transfers of any sized builds from Vanilla to Main (provided it’s builds that you actually built). After this however, Vanilla will remain closed until at least several months after the release of the new map.
In the meantime, if you have any questions, please ask a manager and we will do our best to answer you. We’re excited to begin this journey with all of you, and hope to bring a map that’s better than any that came before it.
