[Enjin Archive] Need a new laptop - help&suggestions
Started by [E] Avalea

I am in need of a new laptop. Mine is like 6-7 years old + for my career and hobbies :)

I am studying at University in web development and graphic design. I also love gaming such as Minecraft, WOW, Skyrim, The Sims.

Not to sure what my maximum price is yet.... but for now maximum $2000 (Australian dollars)

I have been searching around on the internet, will probably go to a computer store soon so someone can help me.. but most of you know alot about this stuff, so thought I would post here first :)

One of the laptops I came across was the ASUS G74SX, which seems to have a lot of good reviews.. and well I like Apple Macbook Pro but is it really bad for gaming? I guess I just like it because its light, and its pretty. haha. also came across Alienware, MSI, Battalion brands?

So please help me out, I clearly have no idea, and I really really want to hurry up and get a new laptop :)

What laptop would you recommend?!

Thankyou.

MacBook Pro - Great. No good for gaming though. Not light either...

MSI and Alienware: Even a low-end MSI or Alienware model will be fine for medium-level gaming. Of course, if you want to do hardcore stuff get a desktop..
Yesterday was WWDC '12, convention were Apple announces new products. They've announced their new Macbook Pro model.

The new Macbook Pro's come with Retina Display, making it the world's highest resolution notebook to date...

Go read up on it. Specs, Performance, Design, Built in Apps, etc.

http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs/

Honestly I'm not going to type out all the specs, You are about to be a Uni student who's studying graphic design/web development. That's screaming I need a Mac. Not only are Macbook's extremely popular and useful with students, they are practically made for graphic designers and web developers.

I would assume school is more important then gaming to you, Mac's run some games just fine, like Minecraft, Sims, etc. But if you are wanting to have a hardcore set up I wouldn't recommend one.
Hello Avalea,

General Information:

I'm joey_dev. I agree with some of what GACKT said. YES absolutely if your a Graphic Designer and Web Developer such as my self then yes Mac's are #1 ABSOLUTELY!!!!! Thats why I bought one. Now I do Apple Development as well and I LOVE it :d So when I'm talking about  Apple I know exactly what I'm talking about. Yes the new Macbook was released yesterday. Would I recommend it for you? That depends... The new MacBook Pro 3rd Gen (Retina Display) is great but it lacks an Optical Drive (DVD Drive) so that means you would have to buy an $80 External Drive. Personally I don't think it's worth getting it since it does'nt have a Drive Built in. I have the MacBook Pro 2nd Gen and I LOVE it. It's the best thing I've ever bought. I have the 13" model and I love it. It does everything I need plus more. Does it get hot when I play Minecraft? Yes it gets about 160-170 degrees. Apple said that is TOTALY normal and that your not in the Danger zone until about 220 Degrees. Would I buy my mac again if I had to? ABSOLUTELY. Also Macs are really nice because you really don't have to worry about Viruses so that will be a big plus over Windows.

Gaming:

With the new Mountain Lion OS X coming this July it will include Game Center and there are TONS of gaming apps on the app store for the Mac Including Diablo 3 and so forth. If you purchase a Mac now you will receive the new OS X this July for free. (Normal cost $19.99) The Current OS Lion works great with games as well. Apple is really looking at games for ALL of there devices.

Overall:

Buy a MacBook Pro 13" ($1199-US) or the 15" ($1799-US) Model whichever size you like best. They both will do a great job for you. They are VERY reliable and will last if you take good care of it. Since its unibody is made out of Metal it is prone to dents if you're not careful but other then that its a GREAT computer to go with :d

I recommend you buy your Mac at BestBuy they have good warranty plans.

Happy Hunting,

joey_dev
if only my mac could do any of that :p

be careful with macs at times, if you get a lemon like i did, or if you get something good like joey is talkin' about that would be brilliant
Thankyou so much for the replies :)

After reading what joey said I think the Mac may be the one haha.. I guess I just needed that extra information on how it runs, and if it is okay with the gaming I do personally. (I have seen a lot of comments on Gooogle that they are not very good with gaming, but if I was a hardcore gamer I would get a desktop or if I needed a laptop I would look more into gaming laptops (Alienware, MSI, Asus) but I'm not :) + web design/graphic design comes first)

I will definitely check out the new Mac, but will also look at 2nd Gen because they didn't put a DVD drive into the new one (which is stupid, to be honest)! 15 inch I think I will go with as well!

Thankyou again, I will look around this month and hopefully will have found the perfect laptop for myself soon! :)
