You can adjust the amount of RAM allocated to your minecraft client. The default is around 500MB so, if for example, your computer has 4GB of RAM, you're only using a fraction of the available memory. Bear in mind though that if you're increasing RAM allocation you want some to be free for your other applications; always aim to have around 2GB free.

Turn off view bobbing and fancy lighting. Close other open programs. If you are using a texture pack, see if the maker has a scaled down version. 32x packs work well with limited computer ability without sacrificing too much detail. As TPrezzle said, increases the amount of memory Java is allowed to use.
