So just a question before I do something to get myself banned:

How do I know if I am in a place that it is legal to dig and chop trees?

Try digging or chopping the trees. If you can, then you should be fine.

It'll tell you if you can't and the blocks will respawn. If you find yourself not surrounded by any extremely organized/large structures, that area's probably OK to work in
