There are a couple ways you can go about this.

For one, you can find a piece of land that is unprotected and unoccupied. Note that if there's something built near or next to the spot you're looking at, you may not want to build there.

You can also find a city that you like and contact its owner to purchase a lot. There's a list of cities on the wiki.

If you go for the first option, you may want to request protection for your house. Refer to this thread for help petitioning. Happy building!
