WARNING
The Minecraft 1.8 update is expected to be released within the next few days. Do NOT update if you wish to continue playing on Minetown regular world. A temporary vanilla world will be set up for 1.8 when it release. The main world will be upgraded when it is safe to update.(which usually takes around 1 week)

Solution- Back up your jar and then update so you can go back to 1.7

Personally, updated the official client to 1.8 and am using Spoutcraft client to continue connecting to 1.7 servers. As Spoutcraft AND server plugins (plus the bukkit wrapper) will need some time to catch up, this offers the best alternating experience.
