If you kill a mob by flicking a switch and crushing it with a piston, do you get the exp from it?

If you set the piston to make it a one-hit kill, then yes you get exp..

but if you just kill a mob with a piston, you just get its drops

You can collect a few hundred mobs and kill them all at once with a splash potion. Potions of harming for most mobs, potions of healing for the undead.
