1.4 won't work, if you want to join the Minetown servers, as i believe all them are at 1.7.2

But, if you just want to play minecraft in general, Then yeah, the 1.4 version will be fine, even though its quite outdated & you won't be able to play on multiplayer servers(I don't think there's any servers out that are even at 1.6 anymore, besides Modded versions)
